1941 Dodge Pickup Show Appearances

  DP 07-05-15
July 5, 2015
The first showing of the 1941 Dodge WC 1/2-ton Pickup was in Warren, IN, on July 5, 2015.  This Sunday afternoon show attracted over 100 cars and trucks and about 10 motorcycles.  Awards went to the top 20 cars and the top 5 motorcycles.  Our 1941 Dodge Pickup didn't receive any awards, but it did attract attention and some photographers.

All in all, I was pleased with the interest shown and was not at all disappointed in the awards.  The cars were outstanding, including a modified 1935 International Pickup (photo at right) that was perfect in every respect.  It had chrome plated engine parts and a full custom leather interior.  Why that truck didn't earn an award, I don't know.  It was beautiful.

On July 25, 2015, we traveled 10 miles southwest to Roanoke, IN, for an all-day show.  It was huge event attracting 600 cars, trucks, buses, vans, motorcycles, carts and bicycles.  We were in the second group of 300 cars (non-preregistered) that covered two baseball fields.  The first 300 cars had preregistered; they occupied the downtown streets and parking lots of Roanoke.  I don't know if they had awards; we left before it was over.

As before, the 1941 Dodge Pickup attracted interest, discussion and picture takers.  In fact, one guy asked if I wanted to sell it.  No way!  Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so an on-the-scene photo is missing from this report.  If I'd had my camera, I'd have shot an overdone "Wally World" Winnebago that had everyone laughing.

Overall, the vehicles I saw there ranged from beautiful to ugly.  The car next to us (1980 Pontiac) had so much rust on it, I think they paid the registration fee just to get a good parking place.  I never got to the downtown area of the show, but my wife said there were some really nice cars there.  And I think I've learned a lesson here: avoid huge shows.

Trying something on a smaller scale, we took the truck to a show on the northeast side of Fort Wayne sponsored by a Lutheran church.  It was smaller than expected, being held concurrently with a huge show downtown and four other shows in the immediate area.

Instead of several hundred vehicles, there were just nine at this event and two were ineligible for an award (owned by those judging the show).  As a result, our 1941 Dodge Pickup won first place ($10, donated back to the church).  A customized '95 Chevy pickup got second.  As before, our truck attracted a lot of interest, but even this small show was dominated by the 1960s thru 90s muscle cars (three were Mustangs).

Another show (about 20 vehicles) and another interesting afternoon.  It was a last minute decision to go, with cloudy skies and uncertain weather.  Our 1941 Dodge Pickup didn't win any awards; top prize went to a real nice 1967 Chevy Camaro RS (totally chromed-out under the hood).  As always, our truck was a crowd pleaser, but the judges preferred muscle cars.

The next show was at an Eagles lodge in Fort Wayne on Labor Day, which attracted about 100 cars and trucks, among them a few race cars (one being a 1925 Bugatti replica).  After the Top 3 awards, 7 were drawn from a hat.  Our 1941 Dodge Pickup didn't win anything.

As you may notice above, I created a poster showing some of the restoration photos of the Dodge.  I need a better plan; the sun bleached it out by the end of day.  And the 1935 International restomod that impressed me in Warren (July 5, 2015) was at this show.  So I took a new photo to show the engine compartment and some of the interior.

It was a beautiful day and the first car show of the year, so I had to go.  The weather was perfect: a bright sunny day in the low 70's (a week earlier it was snowing and blowing with temperatures the 30's).  The great weather produced a great turn out: about 140 cars and 20 motorcycles.  There were 25 awards handed out, but none for my 1941 Dodge Pickup.  Of course, I don't expect to win anything.  The competition is real tough, but I'm willing to donate registration fees to a worthy cause and have a nice day out looking at rebuilt cars.  As always, the truck attracted interest and conversation.  Unfortunately, being the first show of the season, I forgot my camera so no photos with this post.

The Jefferson Pointe Car Show was just 9 miles from home, but I had to go alone (Mom was getting ready for my sister to come).  There were at least 150 cars of mostly modern vintage, and about 50 of them were Corvettes.  What's the point of showing off a new car just bought at a dealership?  People did show a lot of interest in our truck; it was a real crowd pleaser.  But I didn't stick around to see about any awards; I had to get home before my sister got there.

This show was even closer than the last one; less than a mile from home.  It was a first time effort by a church and a Christian academy that use the same building and wasn't well advertised.  Only 60 cars showed up, and there was no judging or awards.  As before, there was real interest in the story about our truck.  The 1941 Dodge pickup was the only truck there, and just two other vehicles dated back to before 1970.

In case you wonder, I haven't reported restaurant cruise-ins, but we've been to a couple since the last car show.  That's the best way to do it; no designated arrival time and no hanging around for very long.  We spend less time at the events (and have a meal out).

The first show we've attended in 2017 (but not the first truck outing).  We missed earlier shows as a result of our familiy trip to Florida and painting the house.  About 75 vehicles showed up.  No awards for the 1941 Dodge Pickup (don't expect any), but we enjoyed the time out seeing the collector cars.  As always, our truck got a lot of attention and people love the story behind it.

Another opportunity to show off the 1941 Dodge WC 1/2-ton Pickup.  This show was nearby and attracted about 70 cars and trucks. As ususal, our truck drew a lot of attention and discussion.  Also as usual, the show was dominated by muscle cars of newer vintage, but there were exceptions: a 1941 Plymouth sedan, a big 1-ton 1924 International Harvester truck, and an orange 1974 Cadillac hearse (no coffin).

A car show at a neighborhood church close to home, a benefit for mental health group called Cross Connections.  There were about 80 vehicles there, including six trucks.  The 1941 Dodge Pickup was the oldest, with a 1947 Chevy pickup next in age.  The other four were in the 1950's.  There were a half a dozen cars from the 40's and 50's, but about 80%, as usual, represented the 1970's era muscle cars.

In 2023, I got to a few car shows. One was another "Cross Connections" show with nearly 100 vehicles.  Muscle cars were dominanat.  And the 1941 Dodge Pickup was not the oldest; a restored 1938 Chevy pickup earned that honor.

At Car & Bike show a week later there were only about 25 cars with an equal number of motorcycles, but at that one, they gave me an award (see at right).
