LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

The phrase “like father, like son” took on special meaning at the HU/Ness Bros. Hall of Fame Tournament this year.

Charles Duane “Dewey” Kline and his son Dan Kline became the first father and son pair to be added to the Huntington Hall of Fame.

BASKETBALL - DUANE KLINE

Duane Kline entered Huntington College in the fall of 1956. As a freshman guard in his first game, he scored 20 points, going on to average 15 a game as a freshman.

Classmate Jim Hoffman says his first impression of Dewey was a lasting one.  He saw Dewey in the gym at about 5’9, easing down the court and slamming home a dunk.

As a junior at Huntington, Duane had his career high game of 28 points against Grace, going a perfect 14 for 14 from the floor.

In his final two seasons at Huntington, Duane was captain on the teams that
Duane K
Dick Klopfenstein coached.  Duane helped lead the Foresters to back-to-back MCC titles those two years.

Duane Kline finished his career with a total of 1,018 points, which ranks him #33 on the all-time scoring list at Huntington.

BASKETBALL - DAN KLINE

Dan Kline entered college the fall of 1979 first playing for Coach Keith Spahr and then Coach Randy Unger.

As just a sophomore, Dan averaged 12.8 points and 4.0 assists a game, earning him All-MCC recognition.

As a junior, Dan Kline once again averaged double digits at 12 points per game and averaged 3.4 assists per contest that year.

As a senior at Huntington, Dan averaged 13.9 points and 4.3 assists, earning him Honorable Mention at both the MCC and NAIA District levels.

Dan Kline concluded his career with a total of 1,011 points over four years, ranking him #34 on the HU all-time scoring list.

BASEBALL - DUANE KLINE

Duane Kline was not only the center fielder for the Foresters, but he pitched a few times while holding the leadoff spot in the batting order for the Foresters.

As a sophomore, he helped to build the Forest Glen baseball field and became the first to hit a home run in that new ballpark.

He was captain of the baseball teams both his junior and senior years, while helping win back-to-back MCC championships.

Kline hit nearly .400 over his college career; leading the team in home runs one year and stolen bases every year he played. His accomplishments on the field earned him All-MCC honors as a junior and a senior.

BASEBALL - DAN KLINE

Dan Kline, a four-year letter winner in baseball during the years 1979-1983, was also recognized for his contributions to baseball at Huntington.

As a freshman, Dan was second on the team in stolen bases, while hitting .341 at the plate. He also tied for the team lead in home runs that same year.

Dan also helped the Foresters to back-to-back MCC Conference titles in baseball in his sophomore and junior years.

AN EXCLUSIVE PAIR

Duane and Dan Kline are the only father and son combination to score over 1,000 points in their Forester basketball careers.  Further, they are the only father and son to be inducted into the HU Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to these two for their contribution to basketball and baseball while students at Huntington, and their continuing support of Huntington athletic programs.
