Remembered: Coach Richard Klopfenstein
Huntington Professor, Coach, Athletic Director and Founding Father of the MCC

FORESTER COACH AND LEADER

Richard Klopfenstein, former coach, athletic director and chair of Physical Education, passed away in January 2008 at age 85.

Klopfenstein was the “founding father” of the Mid-Central College Conference in 1959, the athletic conference in which the Foresters still compete.  He served as the first president of the MCC Conference.

He was also a catalyst in bringing about the construction of the Merillat Physical Education and Recreational Complex; he even chaired the building committee.

WELL-DESERVED RECOGNITIONS

Klopfenstein was named a Distinguished Alumni in 1998 in recognition of 42 years of service to Huntington as professor, athletic director and coach.

He was awarded professor emeritus status in 1987, but continued to coach golf until 1992.  While at Huntington, Klopfenstein coached 80 sport seasons, including 33 years as golf coach, 15 years as men’s

tennis coach, 13 years as men’s basketball coach, 3 years as baseball coach, and 1 year as women’s tennis coach.  He won 4 MCC Conference Titles in golf and 3 MCC Titles as men’s basketball coach.

In 1985, Klopfenstein was inducted into the Huntington Hall of Fame and new tennis courts were named in his honor in 1994.  He was also an honored recipient of the Huntington Centennial Medallion.

SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY

Klopfenstein served 29 years as chair of the Physical Education Department and 25 years as the athletic director.

During his time at Huntington, he saw the sports program grow from 2 sports to 12, and the facilities advance from a small gym to the Merillat Complex now in use.

Klopfenstein earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Huntington College in 1948, master’s degrees in physical education and education from Indiana University in 1952, and director’s degrees in physical education and recreation at IU in 1953.
