Coach Platt Comments on the New Season

LAST SEASON'S RESULTS
The Foresters were successful in 2006-07:

MCC Conference Champs

MCC Tournament Champions

NAIA National Tournament Team

Huntington was 29-4 overall before going to the NAIA National Tournament; they had beaten Indiana Wesleyan three times. But, much to everyone’s surprise, they dropped the opening game. "That was disappointing," says Coach Platt. "We had hoped to do much better in Branson last year." This year the Foresters may find the going tougher after graduating two NAIA All-Americans.

Eight players return from last year’s team, but just three of them are upperclassmen. The roster has ten underclassmen this year (4 freshmen and 6 sophomores). Be that as it may, expectations are just as great as any other year at the Merillat Complex.

THE 2007-08 FORESTERS
In the past five years, HU has compiled a 137-39 record overall, while winning 71 of 90 games (79%) versus other MCC teams. In that same time, HU has won 4 MCC Conference Titles, won 3 MCC Tournament Championships, and has qualified for the NAIA National Tournament every year.

Traditions die hard, so nobody is calling this a rebuilding year, least of all senior and team co-captain, Doug Sheckler. The Foresters graduated four key players, but Doug is full of confidence. When asked about this year’s prospects he said, "We’ll do well this year."

TRADITIONS DIE HARD
HU isn’t without some great assets. Two past All-MCC selections, Sheckler and Kyle Benge return along with two sophomores (Luke Smith and Kevin Kyle) who played in nearly every game last season.

Add in the others who’ve been waiting their turn plus five highly regarded newcomers,

Huntington Senior Doug Sheckler

and you have the makings of a team with some real potential; one you’ll see develop as the season progresses.

"Doug has really taken on the leadership this season," says Coach Ty Platt. "And we expect some great things from the underclassmen, too. We won’t wait until next year to see what they can do."

Senior Doug Sheckler, junior Kyle Benge and sophomore Luke Smith are Team Co-Captains this season, and all three will be key contributors to this year’s team.

The 2007-08 SEASON
We may see a different game this season, with an emphasis on speed and athletic ability of the several guards on this year’s team. "Look for us to get out and run a bit with the players we put on the floor this year," says Platt.
