Student Managers: Another Element of Teamwork
The Student managers Come Early and Stay Late to Help Forester Basketball Succeed.
IN THE BACKGROUND

Everyone in the HU Nation is familiar with the players and the coaching staff.  But, there are some other members of the team that are rarely noticed: student managers.

In most situations, they are quite content to let it be that way as they continue to do the little things that make the playing and coaching easier.  But the team managers must get to the practices and games earlier and stay later than everyone else.

THIS YEAR'S CREW

This year’s student manager crew is made up of Dane Buff and Matthew Cable.  For the most part, you see Dane on the bench at Home games getting water and towels to the players, while Matt is sitting on a perch way back and up from the scorer’s table recording all the action.

Matthew says he wanted to be a student manager to be part of the great basketball program that has become the tradition at Huntington.  In addition to his job behind the camera, he also gets the players gear to them before and after practices and gets the water and Gatorade ready as well.

THE HIGHS AND THE LOWS

Being a part of the team gives these guys the opportunity to experience high points of the team along with the players.  It was especially great to experience the double overtime victory over Grace and see the team win the MCC Tournament this year.  It was great to see the seniors cut down the nets after that win.

Unfortunately, they also share pain with the players at the low points and expressed the disappointment we all shared over the early exit from the national tournament this year.

INSIDE PERSPECTIVES

The student managers see a side of the coaching staff that the rest of us don’t see very often.  They have learned how serious they can be during practices sessions and

at game time.  They’ve learned it’s best to ask questions after practice is over.

They also mentioned that it was great to see the commitment that all three of the coaches had in being strong Christian role models for the players.

MULTIPLE ROLES
Over the years the faces change in these manager roles; sometimes there is just one and sometimes there are three.  We even had a manager in recent years who became a player when the injuries mounted up.

Managers will step up and do anything the coaching staff needs to help the program, occasionally joining practice drills in years when the bench was not as deep.

THANKS FOR HELPING

These guys are important to the team and should be commended for the time and energy they put into their work.

So, if you get the chance, thank these guys for their part in helping provide another successful season of Forester basketball.
