Michael Albertson: HU Super Fan
One Forester Fan Stands Out ... In More Ways Than One

WHO IS THAT GUY?

Even if you haven’t heard him (possible?), you’ve likely seen him and wondered about the face paint (that caused a traffic stop), the weird green suits, the arm pumps, and that “Go Hun-ting-ton” cheer.

It all belongs to Huntington’s Super Fan, and arguably the most outrageous and loyal fan the Foresters have seen for quite some time: Michael Albertson.

Michael (or Mikey, as he is known to many) has been a fan of basketball his entire life.  He graduated from Concordia Lutheran High School, and although not a basketball player, he was always involved!

In fact, Mikey is pictured in the semi-state team photo of 1989; his arms are raised in a victorious V behind the celebrating team.  That’s typical of Mikey – supporting the team and the players, but being in the background, the role he’s taken on with the Huntington team for over three years now.

Recently, I sat down with Mikey and asked him about his interest in HU basketball.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED?

“Well, when Seth Lochmueller decided to attend Huntington he invited me to attend his first game.  So, I began supporting Seth and his team the best I knew how:  by hollering to encourage them at the games.

“Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, I have a big mouth and other people immediately noticed my presence, including the other players, so it wasn't long before I developed a friendship with all the players on the team.”

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST?

“I think everyone enjoys being part of something larger than themselves; feeling like they are making a difference in the lives of others.  I'm no different, except I've been given an opportunity to support a group of young men who are appreciative.

“And, hopefully, I can serve as an example to them, if only by sharing the mistakes and bad decisions I've made in my life.

“Those who know me understand that my interest is not just basketball, despite the face paint, tacky outfits, and yelling. It's really about supporting, encouraging, and having a positive influence on the lives of the Foresters, and maybe other fans and parents along the way too.”

WHAT HAS IT MEANT TO YOU?

“Beyond friendships with players, families and other fans, I’ve been strengthened. Spiritually speaking, I wasn't particularly well off three years ago. I was trying to make good decisions, but wasn't always winning the battle, so the Holy Spirit went to work in my heart showing me how to replace alcohol with better things in life.

“I got involved with Huntington basketball and it has become one of those more worthy pursuits. By giving to others, I've received more than I could ever give. Of course, it's also a lot of fun and extremely rewarding to be involved with such a great group of guys. Now, don't get me wrong; they’re not perfect; far from it, but they're doing better than many their age.

“I really enjoy the interaction with players, students and fans. It's rewarding to feel like you're having some influence over the lives of young people. If you think society may be in trouble when you look at the next generation, just spend time with HU basketball players; they'll renew your hope.

“The Foresters are truly are a class act. I've been privileged to spend time with them at their best and worst moments, and I can speak with certainty: they are an excellent group of ambassadors for the University, as well as the HU basketball program; they’d make any parent proud.”

THE EXTENDED TEAM

After completing a great basketball season, it’s important to realize that the team often extends beyond the players, and Michael Albertson is one of those to be included.

Thanks, Mikey, for all you do to support the HU basketball program!
