never hit this shot, and unwisely made the challenge.

Flash forward to Nov 13:  it's a home game versus Cornerstone and Jared comes out of the locker room in his "new" baby blue sports coat.  Obligation fulfilled, and everyone (especially Jolene and Roger, his mom and dad), thoroughly enjoyed the moment.

Carrying Mikey For a Day

The Date: November 15.
The Challenger: Seth Lochmueller.
The Challenge: Make it, and I'll carry Mikey to class.
The Shooter: Steve Snider -- He shoots; it's good!

The first thing to explain here is "Mikey," which is a stuffed, mounted head of a Javelina (which looks a lot like a wild boar). They affectionately named it "Mikey"
Seth J after yours truly; a badge of honor which I proudly wear (actually, we do bear a slight resemblance).

Since Steve made the shot, Seth must carry "Mikey" around to class for a day.

However, according to our inside sources, Seth has not yet fulfilled his obligation, due
in part, to some campus coeds who decided it would be fun for Mikey to "run away from home."  As soon as Mikey finds his way back, I'm sure the guys will hold Seth to his challenge.

Meet the Team Dinner

An Outstanding Event Exceeds its Goals

To Coach or Not To Coach

When is a coach not a coach?  When he's a fundraiser, and that was getting to be the situation for Coach Platt.  So when a friend asked what he could do to help, Coach told him, "Help me increase the scholarship funds for more deserving basketball players."

You may think that sounds like the job of a college administrator, but Huntington does not want to lose it's academic focus, so it provides only about half of the scholarship funds that are allowed by the NAIA.

One method of raising additional funds has been an annual golf outing each summer.  While that does help the program, it provides only about one-fourth of the additional amount needed to put Forester basketball

on equal footing with most other MCC schools.

Two Steve's Are Better Than One

Enter Steve Ness, the friend who asked what he could do to help.  The two Steve's put their heads together, along with a newly formed fundraising committee, to plan and pull off the first Meet the Team Dinner.  The goal: net $20,000 for the HC men's basketball fund. The method: sell 300 tickets at $50 a plate and acquire donated goods and services to auction off.

First Annual 'Meet the Team' Dinner

The dinner was held on October 22; the Civic Center was packed to capacity and the entire event was a terrific success with a different "Team Huntington" showing up to manage the auction (photo below).

Goals Met, But We're Not There Yet

The Meet the Team Dinner exceeded all of the goals that were set.  Over 330 people were in attendance, and the dinner ticket and auction proceeds netted $29,600 for the Huntington College Men's Basketball program.  Also, the Forester Cheerleaders, who served dinner at the event, received over $1,000 in donations.

But HC is still not on equal footing with other NAIA schools.  The funds raised by both the dinner and the golf outing, along with that provided by the College, is well short of the amount allowed by the NAIA.

So don't wait for a dinner or a golf outing to support Forester Basketball.  Make out a check to "Huntington College Men's Basketball" and send it to Coach Steve Platt at the Huntington College Athletic Office, 2303 College Ave, Huntington, IN 46750.  Help a deserving student get a quality education.
