Forester Cheerleaders
The Huntington College Champions of School Spirit
 Cheerleading: A Spectator Sport?
They run, jump, yell, holler, flip and flop (rarely), make human pyramids, and
even hold up big signs for those of us who can't hear very well. They are fun to watch, but cheerleading isn't supposed to be a spectator sport; you're supposed to participate and these young ladies
are out there trying to make that happen.

Every year, a group survives the tryout and selection process to lead us in cheering for the Foresters. At this time, there are nine dynamic
young ladies who, along with their coach Candace Cooper and assistant coach Brooke Welch, have put in hours and hours perfecting the routines. They look good out there now, but along the way they've torn an ACL,
sprained two ankles, and injured a shoulder.
 Who Are These Perky People?
The captain this year is Michelle Bowman, a junior and three-year veteran from Adrian (MI),
who is majoring in
 |
business with a minor in fine arts. The co-captain is Katie Haifley, a senior from Roanoke, who is majoring in
communications studies. Both have a special interest in Forester basketball games. In Michelle's case, it's Chase Verba. For Katie, it's Adam Bontreger, in addition to her brother, James.
Other members of the squad include a junior, 2 sophomores and 4 freshmen. The junior is Stephanie Stoffel, from |
Huntington, majoring in mathematics. Rumor has it
|
|
she can really "get loud" at
times. The sophomores are Danielle Bowman, Wabash, majoring in business, and Carrie Horwedel from Yoder, who is majoring in public relations. Both enjoy supporting the team and getting the
crowd into a game. Angela Newsome, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, is the alternate, in case those injuries actually take someone out of action.
 The freshmen are Ashley Counts from Greenwood, majoring in communications; Bethany Lynch from Covington, majoring in youth ministries;
Tiffany Seiter of Ashland (OH), with a double major in broadcasting and digital film studies; and Kristie Slane, Fort Wayne, majoring in education (emphasis in special education). They all have a great
attitude and want to promote HC school spirit. Tiffany has experience in gymnastics, as does Kristie. In fact, you'll see both of them doing a series of flips across the gym floor at the games.
 Extra Extracurricular Activities
In addition to appearances at men's basketball games, they also support the Lady Foresters
at several of their home games. As if cheering wasn't enough, they do decorations, put up signs, and build those hoops that
|
the Foresters charge through just before game time. Also, at our Meet the Team Dinner, they served the meal. Perhaps more notably, they have also
taken on support of a family in the local Huntington |

|
area. These are wonderful young ladies, so the next time you see them selling things as you
enter the gym, buy something; it's for a good cause. When they get out on the floor; don't just be a spectator -- participate!
