Multi-Faceted Foresters

The Foresters Are More Than Basketball Players

The 2004-05 Foresters are going to be an exciting team to watch this season.  The leadership of senior Adam Bontreger and juniors Chase Verba, Steve Snider, and Trevor Shively will be more then enough to keep this team motivated.

Throw in the development of Jared Yoder, Kyle Ganton, Seth Lochmueller and James Haifley to the mix, add the unexpected transfer of Alex Kock, along with incoming freshmen Doug Sheckler and Trent Shively, and you have the makings of a great basketball team.  So, who are these guys?

Adam Bontreger (#21, 6'0 Senior)

Adam Bontreger comes to Huntington College from Topeka, IN, (and Westview HS) via Bethel College.  He transferred to Huntington after his sophomore year at Bethel, partly because his best friend Derek Yoder played for Coach Platt and liked the College, as well as the basketball program.

Adam looked at Huntington; he was impressed with the academics and Coach Platt's approach to the game.

As an English education major, Adam will begin his student teaching at Huntington North HS in the spring.  You should know that he'll be teaching a sophomore honors class.

That level of student teaching comes as no surprise to anyone who knows Adam.  He is an NAIA Scholar-Athlete and he's just as committed to his academics as he is to his basketball.
Adam

Adam spent much of the summer working for the Town of Topeka maintaining their baseball and softball diamonds.  He also found time to play a little softball himself and, of course, socialize with his girlfriend Katie Haifley (a cheerleader at HC).

Adam is also gifted with musical talent; he sang with the College musical group Preeminence last year.  He also plays the guitar and piano.  He sang the National Anthem before a home game last season; maybe he'll do it again.  Adam is joined at Huntington College by his sister Jodi, who is a sophomore Psychology major.

Steve Snider (#33, 6'7 Junior)

Steve was highly recruited out of high school by several colleges, as well as the Air Force Academy.  He chose Huntington primarily because of Coach Platt and the players.  Steve says that one huge difference between high school and college is that he didn't have a chance to play ball with close friends in high school, but in college the players are his closest friends.

Steve is a business major, with a 3.4 cumulative GPA in college!  Born in Michigan, his family moved to Indy
when he was just 4 years old. Steve is a honor's graduate of Hamilton Southeastern where he attended high school.

His sister Kelly graduated from high school just last year and is now attending Franklin College, where she's playing basketball.

You can bet that parents Terry and Dee Anna are going to be busy traveling the college circuit this basketball season.
Steve

Here's a piece of "Steve lore" for you: during a growth spurt between his sophomore and junior years of HS he grew several inches, earning the nickname "Tree."  Maybe we can start a new trend this season calling Steve "Tree."  I'm sure he'll really appreciate that.

After recovering from a strenuous semester of school, Steve focused his summer on gaining strength, and improving his game.  He had the unique opportunity of working with a personal trainer this summer; one that also works with several of the Indiana Pacers.  If you've seen Steve lately you know that these efforts have really paid off.

But not everything is easy when you're 6'7.  Besides having a longer bed, Steve told me about a trip to King's Island this summer.  After waiting in a line for what seemed like an eternity, he was denied access to the ride due to his height.  Fortunately, there were only two rides upon which he wasn't allowed.  Wow, there actually is a downside to being a tall guy!

Trevor Shively (#4, 5'10 Junior)

After a brief stint as a physical therapy major, Trevor has settled on a degree in recreation management.  A
